Aintree Festival Of Motorsport

(31 Aug 04)

Twenty years to the day after the old Aintree circuit was last used for a full-scale motorsport event, as a special stage on the 1984 Lombard RAC Rally (though a smaller layout has been used more recently for sprint events), there's a chance for a nostalgic non-competitive drive on the track which used to host the British Grand Prix.

Celebrating the Liverpool circuit's 50th anniversary, and Aintree's better-known history as the Grand National course, the Festival of Motorsport will be held from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 November. On Friday, the whole event will be motorsport-based. The Saturday and Sunday programmes are mixed, with static motorsport displays while the racing - on grass - is reserved for the steeplechasers.

Stirling Moss, Tony Brooks and Roy Salvadori, who all raced at Aintree, will be the hosts at various events, including fund-raising dinners for local charities.

The organisers' intention is to run the Festival for each of the next five years, with the hope of eventually bringing motor racing back to Aintree.
